- recruitment of new board members,
- skills gaps on boards,
- and lack of diversity in board members stood out as common issues.
We also discussed the challenges of retaining skilled board members and how to avoid overwhelming new recruits. A local social enterprise director suggested introducing an advisory group as a stepping stone for new trustees, allowing them to gain experience before becoming formal directors. This allows new members to get to know the workings of the organisation and determine whether it is a good fit for them, before committing to sitting on the board.
Other discussions focused on:
- recruitment packs;
- building understanding of the responsibilities of board members;
- dealing with conflict on boards,
- succession planning.

Next steps to support trustees and board members
A key goal of the session was to find out what support trustees and board members would most value from Empowering Communities in the future. A poll of attendees suggested that further online networking events would be most valued. This was closely followed by in-person networking and training sessions. As we plan our support offer for 2025 and beyond, we will ensure that the needs of board members are prioritised. We would like to thank all trustees and directors for their dedication in what are often very demanding roles, and for sharing their experience and insights with us.
Feedback from the event:
Really appreciate the support and opportunity to meet peers. Look forward to what is next!
Feeling the support! Thank you… just good to see the things we have in common.
