Remembering a cherished colleague

Last year Voluntary Norfolk’s Better Together service lost a cherished colleague – Laura Hughes – who died suddenly from sepsis. We are keen to support her family’s efforts to raise awareness of its dangers.

In the words of her parents, “Laura was a bright, bubbly and caring person. Her earlier working life was in entertainment during which time she worked with P&O, then moved into hospitality. Following Covid she worked as a Life Connector with Better Together Norfolk. This work led to a counselling degree course. Her aim always, was to spread laughter and make a positive difference by helping others.” Her commitment and dedication to her work was demonstrated when she became the service manager for Better Together.

Returning from holiday Laura felt cold so went to bed. That night she collapsed. Laura was taken to hospital, given antibiotics and placed on life support. After 9 hours in hospital Laura passed away totally unexpectedly. It is unknown what triggered the sepsis.

Laura Hughes’ parents are raising awareness of sepsis

Sepsis arises when the body’s reaction to an infection spirals rapidly out of control, injuring its own tissues and organs. It kills around 50,000 people annually in the UK: more than from breast, bowel and prostate cancer combined. Tragically, it took Laura’s life in a matter of just hours.

As part of Laura’s legacy, her parents want to raise awareness of this indiscriminate and brutal disease. This September, starting on World Sepsis Day on 13th, the Hughes family will be walking 48 miles of the Norfolk Coastal Path between the piers at Cromer and Hunstanton. Funds raised by this event in memory of Laura will help Sepsis Research FEAT deliver its vital research and awareness work. Laura’s parents said:

“We don’t want others to go through the heartbreak we continue to endure. On world Sepsis Day,  Friday 13th September we, Laura’s parents and sister (Joan, David and Emma) begin our walk. This will be in Laura’s memory. If anyone would like to join us for part of our walk or wave us along our way you are most welcome.”
