Norfolk’s Men’s Shed Makes National Impact
Poringland Shed Reaches Final in UK Men’s Shed ‘Shed of the Year’ Awards
The Men’s Shed Network in Norfolk is celebrating a major achievement as Poringland Shed was recently nominated for the prestigious UK Men’s Shed Association (UKMSA) ‘Shed of the Year’ award. The award ceremony, held at the Palace of Westminster, recognised the vital work of Men’s Sheds across the UK in supporting men’s health, wellbeing, and community involvement.
The event was originally scheduled for May but postponed due to the general election. It was hosted by the Speaker of the House of Commons, Sir Lindsay Hoyle. A delegation from Poringland Shed attended the ceremony and enjoyed a memorable day at the Houses of Parliament. While Poringland Shed didn’t take home the top prize, reaching the final was a tremendous honour, showcasing the increasing profile of Norfolk Sheds at a national level.
Henry Gowman, a member of the Poringland Shed, shared his excitement about the event. He said: “It was a great experience to be part of such a prestigious event and see the work of Men’s Sheds recognised in Parliament. We’re proud to have represented Norfolk.”
What Are Men’s Sheds?
Men’s Sheds are community spaces where men can come together and work on practical projects. It allows them to enjoy social activities in a relaxed, supportive environment. They offer men the chance to share skills, build friendships, and give back to their communities. Importantly, they help combat loneliness and isolation, which can affect men disproportionately, particularly after retirement or life changes.
Research has shown that social isolation can have serious impacts on both mental and physical health. Men’s Sheds provide a safe, welcoming place for men to talk, build confidence, and regain a sense of purpose. In Norfolk, Sheds play a crucial role in helping men of all ages overcome loneliness by offering companionship and meaningful activity.
New Sheds on the Horizon
